Introduction

PureVPN is a commercial VPN based in the British Virgin Islands, found in Hong Kong.

A big plus point of PureVPN is the availability of 6,500+ servers in 78+ countries, many physically located. It is available in many languages, such as Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, etc., for international users.

PureVPN has physical and virtual servers, but most are material and have better performance.

These diverse server locations are an excellent selling point of PureVPN because many servers correspond to less server congestion, leading to high speeds.

PureVPN is also equipped with high-end security features and has a lot of other benefits as well. However, it also has some drawbacks (like its shady privacy policy), which we will warn you about later.

Thus, this article covers all the questions you might have before buying this VPN. Therefore, keep reading to find out whether PureVPN is worth your time and money or not!

PureVPN Review

Introduction

We are becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyber-attacks in this digital age. These cyber-attacks may lead to the theft of personal and sensitive information, which can cause emotional and financial damage.

According to the latest research, in 2020, the average cost of a data breach to companies was $8.64 million US dollars in the United States, up from $8.19 million US dollars the previous year. On an average the data breach costed $3.86 million in the United States.

Hence, to avoid these data breaches, we need to make our devices more secure by taking safety measures. One such safety measure is using, whose primary purpose is to protect your devices in public and private networks.

With the rise in VPN service providers, choosing a VPN service that works best according to our needs has become challenging. That’s why here at VPNSaver, we have reviewed different VPN services to help you choose the best service for you.

In this article, we have discovered all the features of PureVPN in detail that will help you make an informed choice regarding its purchase. Hence, if you are interested in purchasing PureVPN, keep reading!

Purevpn interface

PureVPN privacy

PureVPN has a questionable past when it comes to keeping logs, considering the disclosure of its user’s personal information by PureVPN in 2017

Hence, we’re worried that the information it gathers from your usage isn’t fully encrypted. Although we are happy to see PureVPN relocate from Hong Kong to the British Virgin Islands, the company still collects far too much data for us to accept it without hesitation.

After years of criticism for its invasive logging policy, PureVPN has sought to alter its public image. Despite stating all of the right things on its website, the adjustments to its logging policy are insufficient.

PureVPN collects information from its users, including connection timestamps, your ISP, amount of bandwidth consumed, server location, and the number of times you connect to it.

This is way too much information collected than we’d prefer. Any attempts to separate your account from this data are not mentioned in the PureVPN privacy policy. We believe that connecting a PureVPN user to service activity is enough for handing over data to other entities.

Naturally, it would be best never to use a VPN for unlawful purposes. However, if you live in a nation where the government can demand access to your surfing data at any time, PureVPN will not provide you with complete anonymity.

PureVPN pricing and plans

Like Tunnelbear and SaferVPN, which we have reviewed earlier, PureVPN also becomes less expensive for longer subscriptions. Its prices have dropped to their lowest point in history, with a two-year subscription delivering the best value.

Moreover, a 7-day-trial service is available for $0.99 on some platforms, which you can use to test this VPN service, or you can avail of the 31-day money-back guarantee for this purpose.

purevpn plans

The detail of the three paid subscriptions is described below:

  • Monthly plan: This is the most expensive plan in which you will have to pay $10.95 for a one-month subscription. 🙁
  • Yearly plan: It will be much more affordable if you buy the annual plan since it costs $35.88 for the first year and $69.96 afterward ($2.99 per month). 😮
  • 2-year plan: This plan is the most budget-friendly as it requires you to pay $47.76 for the first two years and $69.95 afterward ($1.99 per month). 🤩

This shows that PureVPN has various short and long-term paid plans. But an important thing to note here is that you’ll have to pay the entire subscription amount up front to make these long-term discounts.

However, if you need advanced features, you’ll have to pay extra money every month, which is a disappointment because it significantly raises the monthly cost. Some of these add-ons are described below:

  • Port forwarding is an additional $0.99 per month.
  • The dedicated IP address in 7 countries for an additional $2.99 a month
  • $3.99 per month for a dedicated IP with DDoS protection
  • $3.49 per month for a dedicated IP with port forwarding

Users who desire port forwarding should look for a VPN that offers it as part of their basic plans. Even though the long-term pricing is affordable, PureVPN is still a pretty terrible value for money.

Thus, if you’re looking for budget-friendly VPNs, we wouldn’t recommend PureVPN for you. Because many other VPNs are less expensive and far more effective.

The payment methods are diverse, including payments from credit cards, debit cards, PayPal, UnionPay, Bitcoin, and other cryptocurrencies (non-refundable).

Streaming with PureVPN

PureVPN may or may not be a suitable VPN for streaming depending upon your requirements. All of PureVPN’s dedicated streaming servers were recently discontinued.

To stream with PureVPN, connect to a server in the desired region and start streaming. It has become as straightforward as that.

Every UK server we tried unblocked BBC iPlayer. However, none of the US servers did. It can only unblock Netflix in four countries: Canada, Germany, Ireland, and Italy.

This performance is good, but plenty of other VPNs can unblock as much as 30 Netflix libraries and other streaming sites.

PureVPN can also unblock Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. However, because the VPN does not work well with DAZN or HBO Max, we recommend that you use a VPN that can stream HBO Max.

Is PureVPN secure?

Yes, PureVPN is a secure VPN that encrypts and protects your internet traffic as it passes through the network with AES-256 encryption and leak protection.

Recently, PureVPN has introduced different functions and settings on the Windows desktop client. There are much fewer customization and connection choices now than there were previously.

First off, the protocol list has been reduced. You can connect to PureVPN using one of three protocols: IKEv2, IPSec (on Mac and iOS only), or OpenVPN (TCP or UDP). It used to offer some old and incorrect protocols, which we’re delighted to learn are no longer available.

There is an option to enable the internet kill switch, which is beneficial. This is, in our opinion, the single most significant advanced function a VPN can provide. It protects your IP address from being revealed if the connection is dropped by accident. Split tunneling is also accessible on Windows and Android, a welcome addition.

Port forwarding is another helpful feature for torrents, dramatically enhancing download speeds. Hence, it’s a disappointment that they’re charging extra for it. However, it is not included in the company’s standard payment plan. You must pay an additional $0.99 per month to port ahead.

While connected, we also ran a DNS leak test. Pure VPN protected our DNS information adequately. But it did not own the DNS server that took its location. Live support declined to say whether PureVPN DNS servers are still used or even exist.

PureVPN has eliminated checkboxes and automatically enabled 256-bit encryption and IPv6 leak protection. This improves the app’s usability for less experienced users, but it may be inconvenient for expert users who prefer manual control. However, you still have the power to choose your favorite protocol.

Hence, in conclusion, we can say that PureVPN isn’t the most secure VPN available, but it gets the job done. While we like how the apps have been simplified by making features automated, we’d want to see port forwarding included in the standard pricing plan, and the WireGuard protocol introduced.

Is PureVPN suitable for torrenting?

No, we won’t recommend using PureVPN for torrenting. This is because not all PureVPN servers support P2P transmission

The servers that have been optimized are highlighted, but there are significant gaps due to a shortage of torrent-friendly servers. For example, if you are in southern Africa, the nearest torrenting server is in Angola, which is hundreds of kilometers distant.

Moreover, the logging policy of PureVPN is a significant concern since there have been significant controversies in the past. Despite that, this VPN still logs a lot of data which is not desirable for torrents to feel secure in their anonymity.

Hence, we suggest you look for other VPN options if your primary concern is torrenting.

PureVPN Speed

PureVPN’s speed has improved over time, and it has become a lot faster than it used to be. You won’t notice a change if you use the VPN while doing any online task.

PureVPN is a quick VPN service which is our key finding. We put it through its paces on both short-distance and long-distance connections. We found that the speed decreased by 10% on local links, which is admirable.

Likewise, during the tests on international connections, we were completely surprised by the excellent results. However, we tested by using a 100 Mbps private broadband line. So if your internet connection is slower, your speeds will automatically be slower.

PureVPN has always lagged behind its competitors in speed; however, recent results are outstanding. Hence, we can call it a fast VPN, and you may still stream, play games, and browse the web with it as usual.

PureVPN app

PureVPN has excellent device compatibility and features custom apps for Windows desktop, Mac OS, iOS, and Android devices.

The detail of apps on some other devices is described below:

  • Routers: PureVPN is one of the rare apps that offers a helpful app for routers. After installing the PureVPN DD-WRT router applet, you can browse a simple GUI from your router’s login page that enables you to select servers and activate many other functionalities.
  • Linux OS: This VPN is not suitable for Linux users, though. While it has installers for all major Linux distributions, they all work through the command line. It’s unappealing, inconvenient, and lacking essential functionalities like DNS leak protection.
  • Amazon Fire TV app: This app may not be extraordinary, but it’s easy to navigate and allows you to connect to your selected server with only a few button hits. Of course, PureVPN does not unblock all streaming libraries, but if you’re satisfied with the options, it’s a good choice.
  • Kodi: PureVPN is one of the rare VPNs that offer a Kodi add-on. However, we don’t endorse PureVPN with Kodi because of its problematic logging policy.
  • Browser extensions: PureVPN premium includes browser extensions for Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox equipped with WebRTC leak protection. However, these extensions do not encrypt your connection and cannot be used as a replacement for the complete desktop client.

Other streaming devices: The option to install PureVPN on your router ensures that all other streaming devices and platforms are protected. Because smart DNS isn’t available, the only option to unblock streaming sites on consoles is to set up a router.

PureVPN FAQs

Because of Netflix’s VPN detection system, many VPNs no longer operate with the service. PureVPN, on the other hand, has found a way to get around these restrictions so that you can use it to watch Netflix. PureVPN can also be used to change Netflix regions and gain access to many shows from Netflix libraries worldwide.

Yes, Pure VPN offers split tunneling but only on Windows desktop clients and Android devices. The split tunneling feature lets you share some web traffic to your ISP while sending the rest through an encrypted VPN tunnel. An example of this feature in action would be allowing you to watch geo-restricted content on Netflix through your ISP while browsing the web simultaneously.

Yes, Pure VPN should be able to connect to China because it uses the SSTP tunneling protocol, which allows it to escape the Great Firewall in most cases. However, if you feel dissatisfied with the service, you can choose from numerous other VPN services available out there.

Yes, you can find many comprehensive support articles on their website to guide you regarding your queries thoroughly. However, some of these articles might not be updated and could include instructions and features of older app versions. You can also use the highly responsive live chat on their website, but those agents are not knowledgeable, and you might not be satisfied with the answers. Thus, we were not that satisfied with the customer support of PureVPN as compared to ExpressVPN.

Our Verdict

By considering all the pros and cons of PureVPN, we don’t think we would recommend you purchase it. Although there have been impressive improvements in speeds, the extra cost for advanced features just doesn’t cut it.

Moreover, the lack of torrent-friendly servers and extensive data collection are serious shortcomings that need to be addressed.

However, there is no harm in testing this VPN service for yourself, and you can do so by availing of the 31-day-money-back guarantee offer. If you don’t feel satisfied with the service, cancel the subscription and claim a refund.
