Proxy vs VPN, what's the difference?

When it comes to security and privacy on the internet, everyone wants the best. Proxy and VPN both provide an extra layer of protection to protect your online activity. It is challenging to choose one, so we’re here to help.

Is proxy the same as VPN? The short answer is no. Although both mask your IP address, only a VPN encrypts the data you send or receive.

What is VPN?

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) encrypt your internet traffic, providing anonymity. It works as a shield which protects your activity from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or any other third party.

A VPN allows you to establish a secure network connection while using public networks. VPN has become a need in this digital era.

Furthermore, VPNs provide you access to blocked sites, bypass restrictions, disguise your whereabouts and secure data transfer.

What is a proxy, and how does it works?

A proxy server provides a link between the internet and users. It is referred to as an intermediary between end-users and the web pages they visit online. It has its IP address; therefore, when you send a request on the internet, it is routed to the proxy, which gets a response from the webserver.

Proxy servers protect the computer by acting as web filters or firewalls. Proxies also provide balance internet traffic to avoid crashes and save bandwidth by caching files.

What is the difference between proxy and VPN?

Proxy servers hide your identity from websites you visit but do nothing to encrypt your connection to the server itself.

Whereas VPNs encrypt data before sending it to the client and decrypt it only when they receive it.

Here are some main differences between proxy and VPN.

Proxy server VPN
It costs around $5 /per month Costs around $5-$12 /month
A single proxy server can service hundreds of users at a time A VPN can only support one-six connection at a time
Protects from malware and other internal attacks Protects from DDoS and other brute force attacks
May struggle to provide megabit/second Usually offers 50 Mbps or higher

However, if you want encryption, location spoofing, and higher speed, VPN is a better choice. Some of the best VPNs are:
